Welcome, and thank you for visiting Jeremy Johnson Playgroups! I’m Jeremy, and I’ve spent over 20 years working with children of all ages and developmental needs. My experience across many childcare roles has shaped a deep passion for outdoor learning, child‑led exploration, and creating safe, joyful moments for kids. I started this playgroup to give families reliable weekend support and to offer children a naturally unplugged space rooted in curiosity and connection. Jeremy Johnson Playgroups also provides childcare workers with a flexible and meaningful way to earn supplemental income. I’m glad you’re here—feel free to explore the page and reach out anytime!
A peek into a day at Jeremy Johnson Playgroups
We believe the best childhood memories are made with active muscles and inspired minds. Our weekend sessions blend active hiking and nature exploration with enrichment programs designed to spark curiosity and real-world skills. Right in our local parks, children engage in cognitive play using brain-boosting tools like magnetic tiles and block structures, alongside creative arts and crafts that feature unique nature findings. Our mission is to provide a vibrant, screen-free space where kids build physical confidence, engineer big ideas, and develop a lifelong connection to the great outdoors—all while creating lasting friendships.
Nature exploration
We hit the trails to teach kids how to navigate, observe local wildlife, and safely interact with the environment. It’s all about building a deep, hands-on connection to the great outdoors.
Enrichment Programs
We bring unique, engaging experiences directly to our playgroups by hosting special guests throughout the season. From interactive music sessions and kids' yoga to unforgettable days with a puppy petting zoo, these programs are designed to spark new passions and create joyful, hands-on memories
Adventurous Free Play
Unstructured, child-led movement where kids climb, run, and explore. This builds incredible physical confidence and allows them to navigate risk safely while building lasting friendships
Arts and Crafts
Using unique nature findings from our hikes alongside intentional, brain-boosting tools, children create tactile projects that spark their imagination and celebrate their environment.
Frequently Asked Questions

Our weekend playgroups are designed for young explorers typically ranging from 3 to 10 years old. Because we operate in nature rather than a traditional classroom, a mixed-age dynamic is incredibly beneficial! Older children build leadership skills and confidence, while younger children learn through observation. To make sure everyone stays successful, our helpers dynamically split the crew on the trail when needed—ensuring older kids get the rigorous hiking and advanced crafts they crave, while younger children get a supportive, gentle pace with dedicated 1:1 care.

Safety and meaningful engagement are our top priorities. To ensure every child gets personalized attention, mentoring, and support during our outdoor adventures, we maintain an incredibly low staff-to-child ratio that far exceeds standard requirements.
Depending on daily enrollment, our ratios range from a cozy 2:1 (for a group of 4 children with 2 staff members) to a maximum of just over 3:1 (for our largest group cap of 10 children with 3 staff members). This ensures that whether we are hiking, crafting, or exploring, your child is always safely supervised, deeply engaged, and never lost in a crowd. Furthermore, for your absolute peace of mind, every single staff member and helper at Jeremy Johnson Playgroups is fully First Aid and CPR certified, and our team leaders always carry a fully stocked, professional wilderness first aid kit on every outing.

We view social friction and big emotions not as a failure, but as a completely natural opportunity for growth! Our staff doesn't act as rigid enforcers. Instead, we give children the safe space to try and resolve minor peer disagreements themselves first to build social confidence. If they need help, we step in as supportive guides to facilitate a gentle conversation. Because of our great staffing ratios, if a child is having a tough emotional wave, one of our helpers can easily step away from the main group to provide supportive 1:1 attention to help them cool down and redirect positively.

We take a deeply compassionate, full-care approach to trail bathroom breaks! We utilize park restrooms whenever available (and staff always checks them for safety first). When we are deeper on a trail, our team carries clean, private portable potties.
We absolutely welcome children who are still in pull-ups or transitioning, provided they can generally communicate when they need to go. If an accident happens, don't worry at all—nature is full of distractions and accidents are normal. Our staff handles cleanups and clothes-changing with total dignity, compassion, and care so your child can get right back to playing stress-free.

We love playing through classic San Diego overcast days and light rain—it builds great resilience! However, child safety is our absolute baseline. We will automatically cancel a session by 7:00 AM if conditions meet our official safety thresholds, including: temperatures forecasted at 90°F or higher, heavy downpours that make trails slick, high winds over 30 mph, or an Air Quality Index (AQI) over 100. If we cancel a session due to unsafe weather, you will always receive a full monetary refund or a priority credit for a future weekend.

Think "come prepared to get dirty!" Sturdy sneakers or trail shoes with good grip are highly recommended. On warm days, shorts are completely fine, but lightweight long pants offer the best protection against scratchy plants. In their backpack, please pack a hearty snack (something leaning toward a light meal) and a labeled water bottle.
To keep your explorer light on their feet, our staff carries all children's water bottles and our medical kits in our backpacks while we are actively moving on the trail!
